Mauro Piva depicts constantly a faceless figure whose expression is carefully developed through a repertoire of gestures. In his drawings, the characters occupy everyday scenes – with detailed furniture, patterns and texture. Sometimes they carry symbolic objects such as a crown, a flower or a book. In the paintings, the same figure appears on a monochromatic background like that of a photographic studio. The connection with photography is also explored by means of close-ups, cuts, light studies, and draping in the T-shirt worn by the characters.
