A Galeria Fortes Vilaça tem o prazer de apresentar a segunda exposição no Brasil do holandês Gerben Mulder. O artista mostra suas conhecidas pinturas figurativas e apresenta, pela primeira vez, esculturas em bronze. Em ambas as linguagens, Mulder cria um mundo fantástico, povoado por criaturas imaginárias que se situam entre o drama e a comédia. 

Seus personagens possuem proporções distorcidas, olhos inchados e alucinadamente saltados. 
Com rostos de adultos e corpos de crianças, as figuras caminham em uma linha tênue entre inocência e perversão. 

Recentemente, a paleta de Mulder tornou-se mais vibrante. O artista se distanciou dos tons pastéis e passou a trabalhar com cores fortes, como azuis escuros, vermelhos intensos, amarelos e verdes vivos. Tal abundância de cores contrasta com os complexos temas que Mulder aborda. Na tela Courtesans, uma profusão de cores realça as dezenas de corações que circundam duas erotizadas cortesãs. Em Dutch Girl, uma estranha menina, tipicamente vestida de holandesa e sentada sobre uma relva verde, olha fixamente para o espectador; em On the Beach, a pintura mais sóbria da exposição, uma outra figura feminina nua repousa sobre uma praia ao pôr do sol. 

As esculturas suscitam no espectador ainda mais curiosidade e estranhamento do que as pinturas. Em Tranny, um travesti com seios e pênis, parece refletir sobre a complexidade de sua própria situação. Na obra Mutation, um personagem que possui duas cabeças, reafirma o objetivo do artista de criar imagens desconcertantes que discutem a densidade das relações humanas na realidade contemporânea.

Trabalhando sem inspirações concretas, Mulder permite-se ser guiado por seus mais secretos e íntimos pensamentos. Sua energia e criatividade dão a seus trabalhos uma aura incomum e autêntica.

Galeria Fortes Vilaça is pleased to be holding Dutch painter Gerben Mulder’s second exhibition in Brazil. In this show the artist presents figurative paintings and – for the first time – bronze sculptures. In both languages, Mulder creates a fantastic world, inhabited by imaginary creatures on the border between drama and comedy.

His characters possess distorted proportions, swollen and hallucinatingly bulging eyes. With adult faces and the bodies of children, the figures walk a thin line between innocence and perversion.

Recently, Mulder’s palette has become more vibrant. The artist has gotten away from his former pastel hues and is working with strong colors including dark blues and intense reds as well as vivid yellows and greens. This abundance of colors contrasts with the complex themes that Mulder deals with. In the canvas Courtesans, a profusion of colors highlights dozens of hearts surrounding two eroticized courtesans. In Dutch Girl, a strange girl dressed in typical Dutch clothing and sitting on green grass stares fixedly at the viewer, while On the Beach, the most sober painting in the exhibition, depicts a nude female figure lying on a sunset-lit beach.

His sculptures evoke more curiosity and uneasiness than his paintings do. In Tranny, a transvestite with breasts and a penis seems to reflect on the complexity of his situation, while in Mutation we encounter a character with two heads, reaffirming the artist’s aim to create disconcerting images that discuss the density of human relationships and contemporary reality.

Working without concrete inspirations, Mulder allows himself to be guided by his most secret and intimate thoughts. This artist’s unique, intense energy imbues his works with an uncommon and authentic aura.
