A Galeria Fortes Vilaça tem o prazer de apresentar a primeira exposição do artista norte-americano Thaddeus Strode no país. Sob o título de Phantasmagoria, a mostra é formada por um conjunto de sete vibrantes pinturas de grandes dimensões, nas quais o artista cria realidades inclinadas ao absurdo, misturando personagens enigmáticos a fundos ativos de cores intensas.As referências de Strode são calcadas na cultura pop: passam pelas pinturas de rua, pela cultura do skate e do surf Californiano, pelo Rock, cinema e revistas em quadrinhos, culminando em uma estética que remete ao neo-expressionismo norte americano dos anos 1980. A força e o prazer visual de suas obras vêm das estranhas combinações que o artista estabelece em uma mesma tela, conjugando elementos figurativos com manchas coloridas abstratas e sobrepondo frases truncadas e palavras soltas. O resultado é uma pintura gestual, com toques de humor e protesto.

No universo de Strode, co-habitam curiosos fantasmas, bizarros macacos, monstros, homens com máscaras medievais e uma infinidade de personagens de traçado forte. Todos eles parecem ter sido retirados de uma animação ambientada nos guetos nova-iorquinos ou de um limbo entre civilização e primitivismo.

Na pintura Incantation 2: And the building of a New Reality, um gorila aparece misturado a palavras soltas escritas em espanhol - uma referência à forte presença latina nos EUA – sobre um colorido e expressivo fundo amarelo, laranja e azul. Completando e equilibrando a composição, Strode pinta vários quadrados brancos deixando a tinta escorrer sobre o fundo colorido.

Phantasmagoria define-se como uma série de acontecimentos envolvendo mudanças drásticas de intensidade de luzes e cores, mas pode também ser interpretada como um estado abstrato no qual o imaginário e o real e se misturam, um título perfeito para resumir a produção que Strode apresenta na Fortes Vilaça.

Thaddeus Strode nasceu em Santa Monica, USA, em 1964. Atualmente vive e trabalha em Los Angeles. Possui grande reconhecimento internacional, tendo exposto em importantes galerias e participado de exposições em instituições como Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Musée d’Art Contemporain, Montreal e Brandts Kunsthalle, Odense, Dinamarca. Em 2007, o artista teve uma retrospectiva no Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis, intitulada Thaddeus Strode: Absolutes and Nothings.

Galeria Fortes Vilaça is pleased to present North American artist Thaddeus Strode’s first exhibition in Brazil. Titled Phantasmagoria, the show features seven vibrant large-format paintings presenting realities tending toward the absurd, with enigmatic characters set off against active, intensively colored backgrounds.Strode’s references are drawn from pop culture, ranging from street paintings to skate and California surf culture, rock music, movies and comic books to culminate in an aesthetics reminiscent of North American 1980s neo-expressionism. The power and visual pleasure of his artworks spring from the strange combinations established within the same canvas, where figurative elements are side-by-side with abstract colored splotches, overlain with truncated phrases and loose words. The result is a gestural painting with touches of humor and protest.

Strode’s universe is inhabited by curious goats, bizarre monkeys, monsters, men with medieval masks, and a myriad of vigorously delineated characters. They seem to have been taken from an animated movie whose story is set in a New York ghetto, or from a limbo between civilization and primitivism.

In the painting Incantation 2: And the building of a New Reality, a gorilla appears mixed with loose words written in Spanish – a reference to the strong Latino presence in the US – against background of colorful and expressive yellow, orange and blue. Capping off and balancing the composition, Strode painted various white squares, allowing the paint to run down in streaks over the colored background.

Phantasmagoria is defined as a series of happenings involving drastic changes in the intensity of lighting and colors, but can also be interpreted as an abstract state in which the imaginary and the real are blended; it is the perfect title to summarize the production Strode presents at Fortes Vilaça.
